GOTHA'S HISTORY

Gotha’s rich history stems back to 1885 when a German immigrant H.A. Hempel bought 1000 acres. Hempel named the town after his birthplace, Gotha, Germany. Recognizing the appeal of the beautiful subtropical climate and mild winters, Hempel mailed flyers to northern cities in Europe advertising Gotha. Through the years, several German families moved to the area. Today, Gotha’s main street is named in honor of its founder, Hempel.
