Magic Kingdom Expansion Announcement Blog Banner

Disney's Magic Kingdom in Central Florida has long captivated visitors with its iconic attractions, from Big Thunder Mountain Railroad to The Haunted Mansion. With Universal's new theme park, Epic Universe on the horizon, Disney fans have been wondering when the next big announcement for expansions or new concepts would come. Now, a monumental expansion is on the horizon, promising to redefine the theme park experience once again.

At a recent media event, Michael Hundgen, Walt Disney World's site portfolio executive, unveiled plans for what he described as "probably the largest expansion ever at Magic Kingdom." While details are limited, the expansion is set to be comparable to the Star Wars Galaxy's Edge in size, spanning approximately 14 acres.

We're curious about what theming would fit well here with existing IP (Intellectual Property) that would flow from Frontierland beyond Big Thunder, where recently filed permits are pointing to the park's rear left side as the expansion location. Concept art shared during the D23 event showed hints of architecture with Encanto elements such as Casa Madrigal and what appears to be the cemetery scene in Coco. Further back, more abstract art seems to have a dark and ominous feeling - are we finally getting a dedicated space for the Disney villains?

This announcement is part of Disney's $60 billion investment plan for its parks, cruises, and experiences over the next decade. CEO Bob Iger emphasized the importance of strategic resource allocation, highlighting the company's commitment to flexibility in the face of unpredictable market trends.

In addition to this grand expansion, anticipation is building for the upcoming opening of Tiana's Bayou Adventure this summer. From new Audio-Animatronics figures to live music performances featuring jazz and zydeco, guests can expect an unforgettable journey through the bayou. Disney shared a behind-the-scenes look at the innovative animatronics on the Disney Parks Blog, and if you're a bit like me, you're thrilled that they look much more like traditional animatronics of years past, using less of the digital faces like those in Frozen: Ever After. We're also excited about the two new retail locations announced: Critter Co-Op & Tiana's Bayou General. Recent testing by imagineers has ramped up the excitement for the opening.

As the landscape of theme park entertainment continues to evolve, Disney's ambitious expansion plans serve as a testament to its enduring legacy of storytelling and imagination. So, as we eagerly await the unveiling of Disney's bold expansion plans, what are your predictions for the expansion?
