Despite a treaty in 1832, many Seminoles resisted relocation, leading to the outbreak of the Second Seminole War. The conflict began with the Dade Massacre in 1835, where almost all of Major Dade's column was killed by Seminole warriors. In 1921, funds were allocated to preserve the Dade battlefield as a memorial.

The acquisition, led by the Florida Park Service with collaboration from other organizations, aimed to preserve the land's importance in the Green Swamp region's floodplain, impacting water flow to major rivers. Originally used for cattle ranching, silviculture, and hunting, the land also features natural-looking lakes formed from lime rock mining in the 1990s, providing habitat for diverse bird species and aquatic life.
