Dr. Phillips History

Dr. Phillips gets its namesake from Doc Phillips, who was, at one time, the world’s largest citrus grower. The area was made up of thousands of acres of orange, grapefruit, and tangerine groves. In the 1940’s, Philips hired a planner to create a community in the area for people and workers to live. Philips sold his citrus holdings to a partnership that included Minute Maid, in 1954. After Walt Disney announced his plans for Walt Disney World, the original community plan was revised, and in 1969, Dr. Philips became the first master-planned community in Central Florida.
